14 TREES LTD is a joint-venture company established by LafargeHolcim and CDC, the UK’s Development Finance Institution owned by DFID. It is aimed to scale up the impact on Affordable Housing across developing countries including Malawi through DURABRIC; the affordable, low-carbon construction solution. Currently the company is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post of Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality Management Officer who will be based in Lilongwe.14 Trees is currently present in three countries; Malawi, Kenya, and Ivory Coast, with its headquarters in Switzerland.

The successful applicant will be reporting to the Managing Director of the plant, currently the Country Head of Operations within the frame work of 14 Trees objectives and yearly action plans, he/she advises the Managing Director, Plant Manager and all line managers on production, road safety and quality requirements and develops measures, procedures to enhance safety and minimize accidents in all 14 Trees production plants and operations

His / Her missions are to:

• Prepare forecasts and safety budgets (Monthly and yearly)
• Coordinate and manage the safety functions and activities of all the departments in line with local statutory requirements and develops measures and 14 Trees Health and Safety Management System and standards
• Constantly aims at implementing and sustaining safety and health best practices
• Ensure the safety and development of the work force including contractors
• Contributes to the smooth running of 14 Trees plants and sites through safe work force
• Ensure safe distribution of raw materials and processed and products with the supply
• Ensure Implementation of the Environmental and Social Management System
• Ensure products meet quality and efficiency standards set by the Company as well as MBS
• Ensure the development of employees as well as contractors and other stakeholders in safety and related safety initiatives in order to enhancing safety awareness and compliance.
• Works in liaison with HoDs, Heads of Sections, the H&S and SHE Representatives Committee, and contractors to identify and manage hazardous areas/operations and risky activities
• Determines/design effective measures, procedures and work processes that provide optimal safety solutions
• Works within Malawi Government Acts regulating occupational health and safety in the work place
• Works within the LafargeHolcim -14 Trees Health and Safety policies, Management System, Standards and Advisories.


The scope of roles and responsibilities involve the following

• Ensure full implementation of LafargeHolcim -14 Trees health and safety standards and advisories in 14 Trees operations
• Ensure compliance of Environmental regulations both on site and off site
• Formulate and design training programs for specific staff levels and contractor employees on safety tailored to meet their needs or type of situation in order to increase awareness and improve safety management
• Conduct/run in-house safety programs using audio visual aids to all levels of staff and contractors enlisting outside the expertise to give demonstration/lecture as necessary there by enhance safety
• Investigate causes of accidents i.e. human errors, machine failure, lack of proper safety guards and determines and formulate specific programs/measures to prevent similar related accidents occurring
• Carry out regular research of machine/equipment and operations to identify hazardous operations and dangerous conditions and institute measures and/or training programs to avoid occurrences of accidents in these areas
• Conduct regular inspections on all equipment that is subjected to inspection by government safety inspectors i.e. lifting trucks, chains, skid steer (Bobcat), keeping record of their service
• Check and ensure that fire fight equipment and points are fully serviced and strategically located
• Devise other methods/measures to maintain/increase safety awareness among employees such as running quarterly competition, literature, i.e. brochures, notices, etc. to augment competition
• Maintain up to date records of accidents, serious events, near misses and inspection
• Prepare and submit safety reports to 14 Trees EXCO.
• Conduct safety inductions of all staff, contractors and visitors
• Report all fatal accidents to the Managing Director, the Director of Occupational Health in the ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, and other relevant authorities
• Coordinate all health and safety committee functions and ensure timely meetings and delivery of agreed actions
• Preparing workers and nearby communities to respond to accidents, including providing technical and financial resources to effectively and safely control such events and restoring workplace and community environments to a safe and health condition
• Conduct drills to identify gaps that exist and ensure that the identified gaps are closed
• Improve EHS performance through combination of ongoing monitoring of facility performance and accountability
• Prepare safety reports for 14 Trees and organize monthly meetings to share safety issues and aspects
• Highlight any quality issues to the Plant Manager as well as Supervisors
• Ensure all quality controls are being followed and are performed according to control plan
• Generate quality report, available for 14 Trees Management and Identify trends from daily data analysis
• Is responsible for the recipe used. He is informed and validate any modification of the recipe
• Control visually the quality of the bricks stocked
• Responsible for the curing process


• A Bachelors degree in Environmental Health, or Science & Technology, plus a minimum of two years experience managing safety and health in an industrial set up or manufacturing environment
• Experience in Quality, health and safety management is an advantage
• A good understanding of the local legislation relating to Occupational Health and Safety


• Knowledge of occupational health and safety systems and procedures
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes
