Job Description

We are seeking two Local Government Assistant (LGA) for Zomba and Machinga. The LGAs will serve as a point of contact for the Ministry of Agriculture and other government officials and traditional authorities in Zomba and Machinga Districts.

Under the supervision of the Government Relations Analyst based in Zomba, the Local Government Assistants will demonstrate a strong understanding of Field Operations and local government boundaries, solid understanding of products and practices with support to enable him / her to present on behalf of One Acre Fund during local level meetings, and demonstrate a long-term passion for agriculture in Malawi and be familiar with the challenges faced by smallholder farmers. Lastly the role will involve regular trips to all extension planning areas (EPAs) across our areas of operation, potential travel to new districts, and will require autonomy and structured work planning.

Primary Duties

  • Manage site-level government relations, maintain positive relationships on behalf of One Acre Fund, and establish regular contact with officials at the following administrative levels:
    • Extension Planning Areas (EPAs)
    • Traditional Authorities (Paramount/Senior Chiefs, Group Village Heads, and Village Heads)
    • Ward Councilors
    • Area Development Committees (ADCs)
  • Support expansion efforts through ADC, TA, and Group Village Head outreach.
  • Support early local government engagement in new EPAs.
  • Maintain key local government official contacts database and track interactions.
  • Support monitoring and resolution of risks and issues affecting field operations.
  • Represent OAF in local stakeholder committees and forums.
  • Host local stakeholders for field days and field visits, and manage day-of logistics.
  • Coordinate OAF involvement in district shows and agricultural sector functions.
  • Arrange collection and delivery of documents, reports, and invitations to officials and stakeholders.

  • Passionate about serving smallholder farmers
  • Language: fluent in English and local languages.

  • Strong time keeping and organizational skills

Qualifications

Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • A Diploma from recognized institutions in relevant fields of Agriculture, Rural Development, Communication, Public Relations or Political Science with at least two years of work experience.

Desired Skills Knowledge and abilities

  • Knowledge of agriculture extension and crop production
  • Ability to and experience operating a motorbike
  • Knowledge of District level and Local level administrative boundaries, structures and structural processes.
  • Ability to plan and host events
  • Proven ability to manage local level relationships
