14 TREES LTD is a joint-venture company established by LafargeHolcim and CDC, the UK’s Development Finance Institution owned by DFID. It is aimed to scale up the impact on Affordable Housing across developing countries including Malawi through DURABRIC; the affordable, low-carbon construction solution. Currently the company is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post of Plant Manager (Malawi Plant) who will be based in Lilongwe.14 Trees is currently present in three countries; Malawi, Kenya, and Ivory Coast, with its headquarters in Switzerland.

The successful applicant will be reporting to the Managing Director of the plant, currently the Country Head of Operations within the framework of the plant’s objectives and yearly action plans which he/she helps define, his/her missions. Some of the missions are as follows:

• Prepare forecasts and production budgets (yearly, monthly, adjustment).
• Co-ordinate and manage the production so as to make available on a day-to-day basis, the required product within the specified quality, cost and time.
• Constantly aim at the best performances of the production equipment.
• Ensure the safety and development of his personnel.
• Contribute to the upkeep and availability of the plant equipment.
• Ensure protection of environment in compliance with group standards within his/her field of activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Communicate clearly on information relating to potentially dangerous situations and get confirmation that they are correctly understood.
• Make sure that key equipment is working properly.
• Ensure the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
• Check for safety and cleanness in the workplace.
• Responsible for execution and quality of maintenance work to be carried out on mechanical and electrical equipment, respecting budget, policies and deadlines.
• Contribute to the development of working methods and definition procedures and ensuring their implementation.
• Optimising maintenance operations, using best available tools and procedures in-order to maximise equipment availability.
• Ensure day to day scheduling of maintenance works and necessary resources. Assign and review job plans and scope of work to be carried out with technicians.
• Ensure completion of major maintenance operations within schedule and budget (annual shutdowns).
• Ensure, upon completion of repairs, that equipment is in good operating condition, ready to meet operational requirements, fully inspected, tested, clean and safe.
• Provide reporting on repair jobs including consumption of materials, specific tools, man-hours and skills, and fills equipment history files.
• Ensure structural integrity of all new and modified plant installations.
• Take adequate actions when mechanical and electrical incidents occur.
• Assist the Maintenance Manager with the preparation of the budget (on-going and major operations) ensuring technical justification for maintenance major operations.
• In liaison with the Maintenance Engineer (Supervisor) perform monthly gap analysis of maintenance budget and performance indicators.
• Analyze and propose solutions on recurring problems of equipment reliability or problems concerning safety and work conditions, within the framework of the Reliability Committee.
• Ensure the maintenance practices comply with Quality Management System.
• Support the development and utilization of Computerised Maintenance Management System.
• Participate in the three year investment and Plant Improvement Plan (PIP).
• Manage his team, define the missions and objectives, carry out performance reviews, promote the quality of the work, motivate his personnel, and facilitate communication and relationship.
• Ensure on-going skills enhancement of his team’s employees, helping the development and implementation of training plans. Coach his subordinates.
• Define his department’s needs for budgeting and negotiate them with the Maintenance Manager.
• Keep himself informed of general plant practices so as to ensure “on – call duty”
• Ensure enabling and good working environment for his subordinates and enhance safety at work.
• Ensure and control quality of maintenance work from sub contractors.
• Ensure compliance with internal controls as outlined by Lafarge.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

• Mechanical / Electrical / Civil Engineer degree with at least 3 to 5 years of professional working experience in a production and maintenance department.
• Expertised in the methods required in the SSB plant some of which are as follows; Maintenance Budget, Maintenance Inspections and Job Plans and Lubrication Programme.
• Technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance operations.
• Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic and motor circuits.
• Knowledge of gearboxes, transmissions, welding techniques, lubrication, non destructive tests and general mechanics.
• Local safety rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of Quality Management System (ISO 9001).
• Knowledge of soil stabilised block process which includes mixture of yellow sand and gravel processes.
• Knowledge of project management techniques.
• Computer literacy: word, excel etc.

ACTIVITIES

• Help define the long-term plan, the Advance Performance Improvement Plan, improvement action plans for the whole plant.
• Put forward annual and monthly production programmes and or reports, and adjust them as necessary.
• Prepare and submit annual production budgets.
• Based on the proposals of the optimisation/process manager define together with him/her the actions to improve plant performance and quality of products.
• Co-ordinate the program of inspections, visits and repairs with the maintenance manager.
• Plan technical shutdowns with other departments.
• Organise the manpower to best suit the programme.
• Settle daily problems relating to production and team management.
• Define working methods (optimisation of management means and tools).
• Contribute to maintaining equipment in good working condition by complying with the instructions of use and by regular monitoring of the equipment and by warning the maintenance department if need be.
• Participate in drawing up safety rules.

TEAM MANAGEMENT

Define the Missions and objectives of his/her workforce and carries out their performance reviews, promote the quality of the work and motivate his/her personnel, develop their skills to keep abreast of technical developments.

• Respect production commitments in terms of volume, deadlines, costs, and product
• compliance.
• Ensure that his/her production team performs correctly.
• Ensure that there is a good atmosphere and coordination within his/her team.
• Guarantee the safety of the equipment and of the people working for him/her.
• Guarantee the compliance with the Group environment standards in his/her field of activities
