Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is mandated to conduct research on tobacco and allied crops and provide extension services to tobacco farmers. The Trust is seeking experienced officers to join its workforce as follows:-

Post : PLANT PATHOLOGIST (Short Term Replacement)

The successful candidate will provide direction and leadership in pathology activities and will work closely with Plant Breeders to develop and document disease resistance tobacco varieties. He/she will develop and deliver industry-responsive research programs to evaluate and devise novel solutions for plant disease management, and integrate these into plant production systems for maximum benefit and impact.

Key Function

Diagnose plant diseases, identify plant pathogens, and perform highly specialized analysis/research on an independent basis, using various laboratory, molecular, greenhouse and field techniques including inoculations of plants to characterize pathogenicity and disease development under varying environmental conditions.

Duties

• Reporting to the Head of Research and Technical Services, the incumbent will among other duties perform the following:

• Develop research programs to identify and characterize new sources of host disease resistance in tobacco.
• Develop robust, high throughput disease resistance screening methods.
• Conduct experiments to diagnose symptoms of disease conditions and possible control measures under laboratory and field conditions.
• Provide support and advice to ongoing research projects, and pathology input to the development of new technologies for early disease detection in greenhouse crops.
• Work collaboratively with other researchers, clients, industry stakeholders and the internal business development team to ensure delivery of research and business outcomes.
• Communicate research findings and other technical developments to stakeholders and the wider scientific community.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelors’ degree in Plant Pathology or related discipline. Applicants with an M Sc in plant pathology will have an advantage.
• At least 7 years professional field or laboratory experience in plant pathology.
• Ability to perform specialized standardized or routine pathology laboratory tests
