The Malawi Legal Aid Bureau, established under the Legal Bureau Act of 2010 is a national public institution mandated to provide legal aid to persons with insufficient means. In a bid to reach out to as many Malawians as possible, the Bureau invites applications from well qualified candidates to fill the following vacant post:

Job Title Principal Accountant ( (1 post)
Department Accounts and Finance
Responsible to Chief Accountant
Salary Salary range of Grade G in the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau.
To administer the LABs accounting systems and internal controls to facilitate the planning, allocation and accounting for financial resources.
Implements a system of accounting and financial controls that comply with Government policies and standards and financial regulations.
Reviews systems, procedures and internal controls to ensure an effective financial administration and management, accurate and timely financial reporting and the safeguarding of the LABs resources.
Participates in the preparations of annual budgets in conjunction with other department heads for approval by the relevant authority
Prepares quality management accounts in appropriate formats that facilitate management decision making and provides any guidance required in the decision-making process.
Provides information and assistance to the Internal Audit Department in times of audit activities as may be required
Supervises staff under his or her charge to ensure that the department provides an acceptable level of financial administration and management service to the LAB.
Participates in recruitment, induction, performance appraisal, career management and other personnel administration for staff under charge in close liaison with the Head of Human Resources Management Officer
Minimum Academic and Professional qualifications and Work Experience
Possession of a higher Degree in finance and accounting; full professional qualification ACCA, CIMA, ACA. Full member of ICAM.
A minimum of 4 years in the field of finance and accounting.
Considerable accounting experience using complex financial systems, preferably with Government, some of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience providing the knowledge abilities and skills listed below:
Competence and aptitude
Principles, methods, and practices of accounting, auditing, tax, and financial reporting.
Automated financial systems, including PC and spreadsheet applications.
Governmental accounting standards, regulation and procedures
Apply modern computer-based accounting procedures.
Prepare financial reports documents accurately.
Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Set priorities and prioritize work.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with cooperating partners, external auditors, bank representatives, and officials in other Governmental jurisdictions.
Keep abreast of developments in area of specialism in order to continue to provide services to the highest ethical and professional standards.
